Theory Test

To take your DSA theory test you will need to attend the designated centre for your area. Usually this is not the driving test centre.

The test is split into 2 sections. The first part is 50 questions on highway code subjects with multiple choice answers. The pass mark is 44 correct answers. From 28th September 2009 case studies are included as well. This involves reading a statement then answering questions related to it.

The second part is called hazard perception. Here you are shown 14 video clips from the drivers view of a moving car. You are required to recognise, by clicking the mouse button at the correct time to gain maximum points, situations which either are or could develop into a hazard. To pass this section you need a minimum of 44 points of a possible 75.

Unfortunately, if you are unsuccessful on either of the two sections you will need to re-sit both again.

Most pupils prefer to study at home for their theory test, but I am  willing to assist you if you prefer. The current cost of the theory test is £31, payable to the DSA.

There are a multitude of publications and cd’s on the market to help you study, most of which is available from  high street bookshops. The latest edition of The Highway Code and Know Your Road Signs are a must. But any of the other books shown are of great benefit to aid your success.

The theory and hazard perception tests are also available on CD and can be useful to get you comfortable with the format used on the day.
